God is faithful, by whom you were called into fellowship with is son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
1 Corinthians 1:9
"Go for it!" yelled part of my class, while a student rushed toward the two-point line. "No, no, take the safe shot." one of his teammates shouted. The classroom was full of energy as the student tossed a small ball toward the trashcan and groaned as it missed and rolled under the table. Playing "Trashket Ball" was just one of the fun memories we have made this year. The game involved teams working on a review problems, and then all teams that got the answer correct would get a point along with the chance to shoot for one or two more points with the ball. At the end of the lesson, they gave their feedback as to how they enjoyed the review game as well as how effective they felt it was in preparing for their test the next day.
My math class has just finished our module on rational numbers and number sense. I am greatly enjoying being back in the classroom and am having fun looking for ways to connect the material we learn to real-world and concrete ideas. This week we will be starting our module on algebra with a unit on graphing. The year started off with a project titled "My Math Journey" in which the students filled out what language they had done math in for each previous school year along with what they remember learning that year and their feeling about math. There was a fairly high percentage of students who do not care for this subject and a couple who wrote they have hated math each year. While I cannot make them like math, my goal is that each one grows in their confidence in their own math ability and that they feel more prepared for high school.
Out of the Classroom...
At the beginning of each class, my students have the opportunity to share prayer requests and we take a moment in class to then pray for these things. Several of my students have fathers who travel for part of their ministries and we have prayed for safe travels in Sweden, Thailand, and Africa. We have prayed for one student's family, who is involved with German foster care as they fostered a newborn for a short time and now are fostering a fourteen month old. The whole class has also been praying for their middle school play which just took place this weekend. One of my students had the lead role in "The Ransom of Miss Elverna Dover" and all of the students involved put on an excellent show! They made for an impressive middle school production.
Bürgin Family...
"Can you bark like a dog?" "Where's your nose?" Yep, this is what we are asking a lot of right now, and Alisa is doing a great job responding. She is starting to repeat words like "cracker" and "Oma" and is using sign language for "please", "finished" and "more". She loves to wave and blow kisses to other people when we are out and about. She is walking and climbing and loves playing with balls.
At the end of October, we went as a family on our church retreat and then came home to a few days off together over our fall break. Our speaker was another pastor from our church's denomination who pastors in Austria. He shared from some of the Songs of Ascent out of Psalms. It was a nice time with our church family here, although we all needed to catch up on sleep when we returned home, so having the extra days off for this was perfect timing and a blessing from the Lord.
Please Pray...
For my students to continue to grow in their understanding of math.
For my students to grow in their relationships with God.
For the parents' of my students to see fruit in their ministries.
For the planning and preparing of the church plant.
Praise the Lord, we as a family have remained healthy this fall.
Praise the Lord, for the positive classroom culture that has developed with my students.
Blessings,
Becky
