Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Peter 1:3-5
I am having a great year in my new room in the middle school area. I have two middle school Resource classes that meet in the afternoons. I have six wonderful and energetic students (sometimes they are very energetic). Three of my middle school students are children of other BFA staff. Two are children of missionaries who live and work in the area. The other is a child of a business family from Basel, Switzerland. We started the year off with a Growth Mindset Escape Room. The students had to solve different puzzles in order to break the code and "escape" before the end of the class. We have completed a number of informal assessments in math, reading, writing, and spelling. I then set academic goals for the year with each one. Right now, we are working on learning how to write good summaries, learning the meaning of prefixes, improving math-facts fluency, and working to stay organized. We have also had fun reading together, having a paper airplane contest, in which we threw our airplanes out the forth floor window, and learning new games like Yahtzee, Quiddler, and Tutto. Outside of the Resource classes, I am going into the Math 8 class twice a week to help with co-teaching. Three of my students are in this class. I love teaching math to students and am having a great time working with my friend, Karen, in her classroom.
In the mornings, I check in with a few high school students, all of whom I am continuing to support from last year. I have a senior on the autism spectrum, a junior with ADHD, and two freshmen. I am continuing to lead our Resource team. We added a new staff member this year, Brandon. He is adjusting well and doing a great job working with a number of our high school boys in Resource. We conduct all of our IEP (individual education plan) meetings at the beginning of the year with parents, students, and teachers, which makes for a full first few months of school for our department. During these meetings we share the goals that we are working on with the students in Resource and decide on what classroom accommodations are appropriate for each one.
Fun with Family and Friends
It was so refreshing seeing family and friends in California and Arizona this summer. We were blessed by the trip and the opportunity to connect with so many of you in person. The week with my whole family together in Arizona was such a special time for us. When I returned to Kandern, my friend Karen, the math teacher, and I started working our way over a six-stage hike in our area. We completed two-days in August before school started and then took a weekend in September to complete another two-day hike. With the weather turning cold and rainy, we are waiting for the spring to finish the hike. Christian and I have also had the opportunity to help a new staff member, Kelly, to settle into her new home and start work at BFA. She has joined us at our local church and is also a part of the ladies bible study that I attend.
Please Pray...
For opportunities to share the gospel with my students who do not yet know Christ.
For wisdom in planning lessons for the middle school students.
For the spiritual, emotional, and academic growth in each of my students this year.
For no spread of COVID in our community (we have had a few isolated cases).
For a good time with our local church on a retreat next weekend.
Praise God, that all the new staff have now arrived in Kandern and the year is off to a good start.
Praise God, that our juniors and seniors were able to take class trips within Germany and build memories together.
Blessings,
Becky
